American ShorthairThe cat breed American Shorthair ancestors are thought to have been first introduced into the Americas by the Pilgrims and other early settlers. Cats were needed on the ships for pest control and once in America were aloud to roam free and breed among themselves. The resulting kittens grew up to be strong and easily adapted to extremes of weather and could survive in the wilderness. The first recorded American Shorthair cat was born on the 1st June 1900 and were originally called 'Domestic Shorthairs' being renamed American Shorthairs in 1966. American Shorthairs are working cats, being very good hunters and are in complete control of their environment. Its powerful legs are long enough to cope with most terrains, the coat is dense but short enough and of hard enough texture to resist matting. American Shorthairs make great pets. They are intelligent, friendly, affectionate and healthy with an even temperament. American Shorthairs are gentle and relaxed, mellow and strong. It will most definately practice hunting in the house.
