American WirehairThe cat breed American Wirehair was a spontaneous mutation that changed the normal straight coat to a coat that is springy, dense and resilient. Guard hairs are bent at the end and form a hook. A litter of wirehair kittens were born in 1967 to a pair of farm cats in New York state. Breeders took over the breeding program by first breeding the male from that litter to his litter mate. The male was named Adam and all American Wirehairs can be traced back to him. American Wirehairs are very active, agile and take a great deal of interest in their surroundings. Owners describe their cats as muscular, independent and say tht they take no nonsense from other cats.
