BirmanThe cat breed Birman is also known as the Sacred cat of Burma. There are many legends and mysteries surrounding the origins of this breed. One such legend (Tsun-Kyan-Kse)is that the soul of a priest entered the cat, changing the body colour to golden and its eyes to a brilliant blue. However, the Birman was introduced into Europe in 1916 from the South East and it became recognized in 1925 in France. Most of the Birman breed are descended from the French cat population. The Birman became endangered during World War II, when only one pair survived, however, in order to keep the breed alive other longhaired and shorthaired breeds were bred into the Birman. Birmans have a great coat. They are a delight to care for as their silky coat does not mat like other breeds, little grooming is required. They are 'outgoing' yet give the impression of a quiet power and harmony. Birmans love companionship, especially that of children. They adapt equally well to either city or rural life.
